Then, sevВeral years ago, IВ was disВcussing new movies with my brother Charles and he inВformed me that he and CynВthia had pretty much given up on movie-going, as so many new films seem geared toВwards (mindВless) teenagers-even when they werenвЂ™t adВverВtised as teen flicks. But IВ disВmissed the rest of the stuff on the air, asВsuming (and I never asВsume) that these two were exВcepВtions to theВ rule.

ReВpeated watchВings over the years have only made me apВpreВciate these show mores, never growing tired of eiВther. (Why does teleВviВsion love lawyers soВ much?) It even had some hiВlarВious speВcial efВfects that never ever beВlonged in aВ show purВportВedly about lawyers. She also brought along some Ally McBeal episodes, which, while lacking the charВacter conВtiВnuity of the former, was even more outВstanding in its apВproach to teleВviВsion narВraВtive. Of course, none of that kept me from loving the show and the likВable cast of charВacВters and the acВtorsвЂ™ credВible performances.

Alas, when IВ was first exВposed to this show, it was via BerniвЂ™s colВlecВtion of VHS casВsettes, all duВtiВfully taped off the TV screen, comВmerВcials, and bad edits gaВlore. The DVD techВnology is the very best way to binge-watch aВ great teleВviВsion seВries. Joel FleisВchman abanВdoned in the ficВtiВtious town of CiВcely, Alaska. Joel FleisВchman (a stereoВtypВiВcally obsessive-compulsive-anal-uptight New Yorker) and his gorВgeous on-again/off-again paraВmour MargВeret вЂњMaggieвЂќ OвЂ™Connell (a stereoВtypВiВcally fiery Irish colleen in need of proВlonged anger manВageВment classes) (and perВhaps aВ more manly man in her bed) and the other inВhabВiВtants of Roslyn, Alaska. IВ was amazed by how much IВ enВjoyed the misВadВvenВtures of the misВanВthropic Dr.

(And this is aВ wink-wink-nudge-nudge momentВ .В .В .)Д¬omВpared to the iconic photo on ElvisвЂ™ first album of 1956, the photo on the cover of Blue Hawaii makes Elvis looks gelded!Д«erni first made me aware of the matВuВraВtion of teevee when she brought her VHS colВlecВtion of Northern ExВpoВsure as part of her dowry.

ExВcept for the deВlightful NickВelodeon carВtoons of the вЂ™90s that IВ watched with my daughter-вЂ™Aaahh! Real MonВsters,вЂ™ вЂDoug,вЂ™ вЂHey Arnold,вЂ™ and вЂRugratsвЂ™-I have not вЂwatched tvвЂ™ in alВmost fifty years! 1Д«erni gave up teleВviВsion for Lent years ago and never went back, even though she alВlowed her subВscripВtion to the Catholic Church to lapse shortly afВterВward and was no longer bound by dogma. IВ swore off the glass teat back in 1969 when вЂtheyвЂ™ took the best-ever show in all of hisВtory off the air. REGARDING PRIME-TIME TELEVISION as the AmerВican enВterВtainВment medium of choice: Berni and IВ are inВvetВerate non-viewers.
